Our Women’s team got the new season underway with a draw away at Valencia. The Guipuzcoanas started well then faded as the game wore on although they came close to snatching a win in the final minutes.
The objective was clear from the off – to go all out for victory. Paterna, a place with many happy memories for the txuri urdin after the victories the team gained in the Copa de la Reina Last 16 and the league last season. And today, they showed they were keen to continue the trend. The txuri urdin took an early lead through Nahikari, who took advantage of a rebound inside the area to score the team’s first goal of the season. Nerea was close to adding a second but her effort struck the bar. Just before half-time, Iraia doubled the lead heading in from a corner. The Guipuzcoanas were the superior side during the opening 45 minutes.
But the home team stepped up during the second half and after pushing hard to get back into the game, managed to reduce the difference on the scoreboard. Mari Paz Vilas made it 1-2 from a corner and soon after, following a move down the left, scored the equaliser. The game opened up completely during the final minutes with both sides enjoying chances. The clearest fell to Nahikari, who was close to handing the txuri urdin victory. But in the end, the points were shared.
It’s a good result to start nevertheless, even if we were so close to coming away with a win. Next week, the first home game of the season in Zubieta against Levante. Aurrera Reala!
