REAL SOCIEDAD 2 (4)-2 (3) CA OSASUNA

What a night!

Real Sociedad booked their place in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals tonight, overcoming Osasuna in a dramatic penalty shootout. Despite conceding two early goals, the txuri-urdin fought back to equalize in stoppage time. In extra time, despite dominating and missing a penalty, the score remained level, and the tie was decided from the spot. Marrero made two crucial saves to send Real through to the next round.

The first clear opportunity fell to the home side, with Oyarzabal’s header comfortably saved by Aitor. But it was Osasuna who struck first, taking the lead in their opening attack with a brilliant strike from Moncayola at the edge of the area. The goal boosted the visitors, who made it 0-2 a few minutes later after an unfortunate deflection off Oyarzabal from a corner, leaving Marrero helpless. Real Sociedad faced a tough challenge as Osasuna defended compactly and allowed no mistakes. In first-half stoppage time, Sučić headed at the near post from a corner, narrowly missing, and Soler’s powerful shot grazed the woodwork. Despite creating chances, Real went into the break two goals down.

In the second half, Real Sociedad went all out and created several clear chances. Soler lost control of a ball when a shot seemed easier, Kubo’s effort skimmed the post, and Oyarzabal saw a strike blocked by a defender. Then, in the 75th minute, Turrientes unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the area to beat Aitor and pull Real back into the game. Raúl almost restored Osasuna’s lead, but Marrero made a crucial save. In stoppage time, Zubeldia reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box to level the score, sending Anoeta into ecstasy. The match headed into extra time.

During extra time, Budimir came close with a brilliant header that rattled the crossbar. Before the end of the first period of extra time, Odriozola’s action was illegally handled by former txuri-urdin player Galán in the box, and after a VAR review, a penalty was awarded but Aitor brilliantly saved Oyarzabal’s attempt. The second half of extra time saw Real Sociedad dominate, creating two clear chances that Aitor expertly denied, sending the match to a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Marrero emerged as the hero, making crucial saves to send the txuri-urdin through to the quarter-finals.
