A great end to the season

A great end to the season

The Athletics season could not have ended better for Real Sociedad’s athletes. While the overall season has been magnificent on a collective level –thanks to the historic, third-place finish in the División de Honor club league, on an individual level, it has been just as productive. Txuri-urdin athletes closed the Spanish Championships in Barcelona with four medals, in spite of the thunder storm which marked Sunday’s events.

Earlier, on Saturday, veteran Orkatz Beitia achieved the feat of stepping up onto the podium at the age of 38 to receive the bronze medal in the 100m which Ángel David Rodríguez won. Beitia who crossed the line on 10.61 almost took silver. Istar Dapena also collected bronze for the 5.31 metres which she cleared in the pole vault which not only earned her a first podium, but also equalled the Guipuzcoa regional record in the event.

On Sunday, Iñigo Rodríguez came home third in the 400m hurdles after an impressive comeback in the final stretch, crossing the line on 51.54. Later that evening came the 4x100 relay which has brought us so much joy in recent years. Finishing in second (three years running on the podium now) on 40.55, Orkatz Beitia, David Arques, Alberto Muñoz and Octavian Mihail Romanescu managed to give the all-powerful Playas de Castellón a good run for their money.

As well as being among the medal winners, Real Sociedad’s athletes were among the finalists in five events: Asier Corthay ended fifth in the high jump with his jump of 2.13 metres, the 4x400m relay team also finished in fifth place, Pablo Cid was sixth in the triple jump, Iñigo Uribarren ended one place behind him in seventh while Javier Donés finished eighth in the 110m hurdles.

It was certainly a great end to a very good season for a section which is getting better all the time.
