Defeat at the Metropolitano

Real Sociedad suffered a 3–2 defeat to Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano this afternoon in a fiercely contested match that was decided late on. Goals from Soler and Oyarzabal saw the Basque side fight back twice, but a late strike from the hosts left La Real empty-handed at one of the league’s toughest venues.

The game got off to a difficult start for La Real as Sorloth opened the scoring early on. However, the visitors responded quickly, and soon after Soler fired a superb effort into the top corner following a well-worked team move. The goal lifted the txuri-urdin, who then enjoyed a strong spell. Late in the first half, attempts from Sergio and Sučić ensured La Real went into the break with positive feelings.

At the start of the second half, La Real looked comfortable and barely came under pressure from Atlético. But the home side soon pushed forward, with chances for Sorloth and Nico. Atlético’s momentum paid off when, following a smart backheel from Griezmann, Nico beat Remiro to put the hosts back in front. But just like in the first half, Matarazzo’s side responded immediately. Oyarzabal created a chance for himself and fired a stunning left-footed strike to level the match once again. However, in the closing stages, Nico headed home the winning goal for the hosts.

Frustration for La Real as they narrowly miss out on a point. Their next challenge: Osasuna at Anoeta.
