Misfortune decides the match

No luck today. Coming down from the Cup celebrations and delivering a more than decent performance, Real Sociedad ended up losing to Getafe, a side who benefited from an own goal that handed them all three points from Anoeta in a result that felt completely undeserved. The txuri-urdin, who missed a penalty with the score still at 0-0, created several chances but couldn’t find the net.

After presenting the Cup to the fans, the match kicked off with Real Sociedad pushing forward in search of Soria’s goal. Matarazzo’s side were awarded a penalty to take the lead, but Brais struck the post. Shortly after, on a counter-attack, Óskarsson failed to finish cleanly in front of Soria in a clear opportunity. Then, just before the half-hour mark, in an unfortunate moment, Gorrotxa deflected a cross that ended up sneaking into the top-left corner of Remiro’s goal.

In the second half, the team pushed higher up the pitch in search of an equaliser. Barrene tested the keeper with a powerful right-footed strike, and later Aramburu came close with a header from a corner. Getafe managed to slow the tempo for a while, but Real Sociedad continued to apply pressure. Barrene, with a brilliant individual run, was inches away from scoring. The Gipuzkoan side fully deserved at least a point. Orri narrowly failed to connect with a Kubo cross, and that proved to be the final clear chance for the hosts before the final whistle.

A defeat, the first at Anoeta since December. It doesn’t make it any easier, but with the Cup already secured, it is slightly more bearable. Now, we must keep fighting to finish as high up the table as possible.
