At midday today, Asier Illarramendi underwent surgery to repair the fractured shin bone in his left leg. The operation was performed by doctors Fernando García de Lucas and Gloria López at the FREMAP Hospital in Majadahonda, Madrid and was reported to be a success. The fracture has been reduced and stabilized with the use of an orthopaedic plate.
Arthroscopy was also performed to determine the state of the ankle joint and ligaments. It revealed damage to the deltoid ligament and to the syndesmosis which has been treated with the insertion of a fixation screw which can be removed after a period of 6-8 weeks.
Barring any complications, the player should be able to be discharged in 24-48 hours.
