Imanol, our Chef Conductor, said that la Real had to play their best game to win and the team did it. The txuri urdin beat Atlético de Madrid 2-0 and sealed a Copa del Rey quarter-final spot. Fans cheered on the team at the Reale Arena and goals by Januzaj and Sorloth were the icing on the cake.
The game started at a frantic pace as la Real launched attack after attack. Aritz tried his luck with a header into the side netting whereas Januzaj’s left-footed shot hit the post. Then, Atlético took the initiative with Carrasco going in search of the first goal. However, his shot hit the post. La Real tried to play at a fast pace, which they did. On 30’ Zaldua whipped in a delivery which Januzaj nodded in. What a header! The side from Madrid equalled the game in terms of dominance and posession. Nevertheless, the txuri urdin were ahead at the break.
The second half got off to a great start. Oyarzabal swiped the ball from Felipe and Sorloth made no mistake with a left-footed shot to beat Oblak. This was a hard blow for Simeone’s side. The txuri had more chances to extend their lead but Oblak stopped Sorloth’s powerful shot. The goalkeeper also denied Merino. Imanol's side completely dominated the game whereas Simeone's squad only enjoyed one more chance before the final whistle. Remiro did a superb save to deny Cunha.
La Real deserve to be in the quarter-finals. We love nights like this. We love la Copa and we like to party. Gora Donostia! Aupa, Real!
