Crushing defeat

Real Sociedad endured a heavy defeat tonight at the hands of Girona. After a solid first half, the txuri-urdin saw the Catalan side turn the game around in the second half.

Sergio Francisco’s side got off to an excellent start, controlling the game from the very beginning. Opportunities gradually arose, with Take sending a right-footed effort over the bar. Shortly after, Sergio Gómez made a run down the left and delivered a dangerous cross, but it found no teammate to finish. Girona tried to respond and stretch the play, though without posing a serious threat. Just after the half-hour mark, a long pass from Zubeldia allowed Guedes to face Gazzaniga and calmly slot the ball home, giving the home side a 1-0 lead.

The second half saw Girona enjoying a strong spell, pushing Real Sociedad back and taking control of the game. La Real struggled to create clear chances, and fifteen minutes from time, Tsygankov leveled the score for the visitors. Real Sociedad were unable to respond, and near the final whistle, Tsygankov struck again to seal a 2-1 victory for Girona.

A poor second-half performance has left the txuri urdin side heavily impacted, keeping them in a delicate position in the standings.
