Real Sociedad’s second participation in the European Cup was greater than the previous one.
In the first round, the realistas beat the Icelandic team Vikingur in Rejkyavik. Real won 0-1 with a goal by Satrustegi. In the second leg, they beat Vikingur 3-2 with a brace from Uralde and a goal by Satrustegi.
In the second round, Real beat Celtic Glasgow 2-0 at Atoxa. The goals were scored by Satrustegi and Uralde. In Glasgow, Real were ahead through Uralde but Mc Lead scored a brace and Celtic Glasgow got the win. However, Real qualified.
Their next opponent was the Portuguese champion Sporting Lisboa. In the first leg, the team from San Sebastián lost 1-0 but they won in the second leg with one goal by Larrañaga and one by José Mª Bakero. Thus, Real Sociedad reached the semi-finals.
This time, Real would play against the German champion Hamburg. The first leg took place at Atoxa and ended in a 1-1 draw. Rolff scored for Hamburg but Gajate scored the equalizer. In the second leg, the Germans were ahead through Jakobs. Diego scored the equalizer but a goal by Von Heesen in the last minutes gave the Germans the victory and the team qualified for the final.
