The team “elevator”

The team elevator achieved its fame in the 40s. In the 1941-42, Real Sociedad were relegated from the First Division. However, it was a short stay and the following year, the team from San Sebastián achieved promotion under Benito Díaz.

In the 1943-44 season, the txuri-urdin club was relegated once again. However, this time, the club’s second stay in the Second Division lasted two years and the team had to wait until the 1946-47 season to gain promotion back.

In the 1947-48 season, Real Sociedad finished penultimate and relegated again. Paradoxically, they performed very well in the Spanish Cup where they beat At. Zaragoza, Sabadell, Tarragona and Valencia before losing against Sevilla in the semi-finals.

The next season had an atypical start. Atoxa stadium works obliged the team to play the first three games of the season away from home. The three matches ended in defeat for Real. Things did not look good for Real but the team recovered and fought hard against Málaga and Granada in the championship. The three teams were tied and Real was the team having more goal difference. Real Sociedad beat Valencia in Mestalla which allowed them to maintain their leadership and promote to First Division. Thus, the elevator made its way to the first floor again.
