Today we look back on another of magical moments in European competition. Fifteen years after meeting at the Last 16 stage in the European Cup, destiny pitted Real Sociedad against Sporting Clube de Portugal once again – this time in the Second Round of the UEFA Cup. Just as in the previous meeting, the first leg was played in Lisbon, on 26 October 1988, exactly 28 years ago today. Iturrino’s opener on minute 10 made things difficult for J.B.Toshack’s team – curiously the coach had only recently joined Real Sociedad from the Portuguese outfit; Cascavel levelled from the penalty spot on 30 minutes and Loren scored the team’s second of the night to hand the realistas a vital win and take the upper hand in the tie.
